Imagine a world where high school students only need a 41% to get a C, where tardiness and truancy are no longer punished in any way, where homework and tests are no longer counted toward a student's final grade, and where that nothing-burger education costs the taxpayers $100 million.

That was going to be the future of San Francisco's schools if Superintendent of Schools Maria Su had her way.

But the people of San Francisco came out in droves to say "No!"

On the SFUSD Families Forum Facebook group, the news sparked dozens of critical comments, with many calling the proposal "ridiculous," "embarrassing," and an example of lowering academic standards.

After the backlash, several politicians, who are usually all about promoting woke ideologies, came out in opposition of the law.

Silicon Valley Rep. Ro Khanna tweeted,

Even the mayor sounded off against the plan:

During a meeting with the school board, school staff tried to clarify the rule saying,

The proposed shift is meant to emphasize mastery of content through assessments rather than assignment completion.

In a preliminary response, the district said the grading practices would not be mandatory for schools. Teachers have — and will continue to have — autonomy over their grading, in accordance with agreements with labor partners.

No one was having it, though, and eventually, Su backed down.

‘I have decided not to pursue this strategy for next year to ensure we have time to meaningfully engage the community,' Su said. ‘Right now we need to continue to focus on balancing our budget, stabilizing the district, and rebuilding trust.'

So, it doesn't really sound like she's given up the idea, just pushed it down the road.

Considering San Francisco recently recalled school board members for exactly these sorts of woke policies designed to rob their students of an education and create impoverished activists, one can hope that Su won't stick around in her position long enough to ever revive this monstrous policy.
