The times may NOT be a-changin' anymore...
The U.S. Senate passed the "Sunshine Protection Act" to make Daylight Saving time (DST) permanent across the U.S.
The bill, which is co-sponsored by Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Marco Rubio (R-FL), must still pass through the House and be signed by the president into law.
Roughly 63 percent of Americans would "like to see the changing of clocks eliminated," according to a 2021 Economist/YouGov poll.
"[T]he margin in favor of ending clock changing is much smaller among Americans under the age of 30 โ who have experienced the yearly ritual fewer times than their elders โ than it is among Americans 65 and older, 77% of whom want to avoid changing time," YouGov reports.
This wouldn't be the first time the U.S. made DST permanent. They tried it during World War II. They tried it back in the 70s, too, only to reverse it less than a year later!
"While 79 percent of Americans approved of the change in December 1973, approval had dropped to 42 percent three months later," according to the Washingtonian.
