In a stunning act of irony, a 656-foot-long bulk carrier named The MV Climate Justice was just loaded up with a huge load of coal to be sent back to Asia.
No, this isn't The Babylon Bee: The ship is named that!
Owned by the Monaco-based company Safe Bulkers and flagged in Cyprus, this vessel acquired its very-on-trend name because it's apparently a cleaner-burning ship compared to other bulk carriers.
Well, that sounds nice... but what's even better is the amount of coal it can hold!
The MV Climate Justice was docked in Vancouver, Canada, and loaded up with about 30,000 - 40,000 tons of coal and is currently on its way back to Asia to be burned in coal plants.
The ship and its precious cargo are expected to dock in Yeosu, Korea, by Oct. 18.
The Climate Justice is just one member of a fleet of ships sporting noble names that don't quite align with their cargo and bunker fuel dependence.
Within this fleet, Safe Bulkers also manages the Climate Respect, Climate Ethics, and the Climate Pledge, ships that, while somewhat cleaner than typical bulk carriers, owe their eco-credentials to emissions scrubbers and the occasional use of biofuels.
Ships this size burn through at least 20 tons of fuel a day, equivalent to a thousand cars running nonstop. Ocean journeys are usually measured in weeks. The coal on board, meanwhile, will produce the annual carbon emissions of 5,000 Canadians, as The National Post notes.
While the Federal Canadian Liberal government is cutting out oil and gas, implementing a carbon tax, scaring citizens with "Green Police," and banning plastic straws and bags, we're sending out coal to Asia.
All in the name of climate justice...
Par for the course for Canada!
