Since "Christian Nationalism" is freaking everyone out again, read this megathread on what it actually means

The Jesus freaks are coming! The Handmaid's Tale is upon us! Soon all women everywhere will be wearing burkas and the Christian Taliban will rule us all!

If you hear the term "Christian Nationalist" in the news, it is used to refer to the most "extreme" people who want to destroy America in fire and water and feast upon our souls.

In reality, the term as they mean it is "the people who are furthest from the woke State religion."

It's true that an ISIS jihadi and a Christian Chad homesteading with his trad wife and five kids are both "fundamentalists." That is, they both actually adhere to what their religions teach.

But Islam is not Christianity, and America itself is proof of that.

Is this a random gentlemen from the interwebs? Why yes, yes he is.

Such people often have much more wisdom than the professionals paid to write content.

Because the thread is so long, I'm going to post the rest of the text and links directly here. Let's go!

Christ commanded us to disciple the nations in the Great Commission so we must obey Him. Let's take a look at grammar in the original language to have a better understanding of what the Great Commission means.

As described below it means that we are to teach the nations to observe all Christ has commanded because the verb is disciple and the direct object is nations. This means disciple the nations. What does Christian Nationalism look like?

The overturning of Roe and proposed bills abolishing abortion are great examples of what Christian nationalism looks like. This is because it holds to the historical reformed view that there are separate spheres of authority.

The Church is not the State and the State is not the Church. However, both are to honor Christ.

Governments are to honor Christ as described in Romans 13 as servants of God. The word for servant is the same word used for deacon. Governments do this by promoting good and punishing evil.

However, these governments do not get to choose what is good and evil because that has been declared by God.

Should governments promote evil and punish good, citizens have the right to rebel as a lesser magistrate to establish just rule. However, one must ask by what standard is something "good or evil?" God's word defines what is good and evil.

For instance, let's go back to the abortion example. The modern state has called child murder "good" when it is evil based on God's law. The job of Christians and the Church is to call for legislators to honor Christ by writing laws that are Just. That's it.

Having a Christian nation means you have a nation that honors Christ. Nations do this by promoting good and punishing evil as defined by God.

The call for governments and nations to honor Christ is seen in the Old Testament as well. This is seen even outside of Israel with Nineveh. God sent Jonah to call the people of Nineveh to repent.

Eventually, when Jonah's message reached the King he issued a proclamation for people to repent and call on God earnestly.

This is a great example of how God wants all nations to honor him as Nineveh was a gentile nation and that the Gospel is for all peoples. However, just because a nation's law honors Christ it does not make people Christian (and no one is arguing for that).

Nineveh is further evidence of this as the people eventually fell back into their sin only a few generations later and God destroyed them as described in Nahum.

Psalm 33:12 says "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD…" this shows a nation can have God as their Lord which also means nations can worship other gods.

Nineveh is a great example of how nations will be blessed when they honor Christ but when they turn from Him they will be shattered as described Psalm 2.

Christian Nationalism hedges against Statism as without God to be subservient to the State declares itself as god. Without God to declare what is good and evil the State can arbitrarily declare evil as "good."

The idea that a State can recognize no higher authority and provide just law is laughable. Just look at the modern American State.

The "secular neutral" American state has given us Pride month, drag queen story hour, and child sacrifice (abortion). When one goes to school or work one has to attend Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity training (DIE) which is the secular form of a catechism.

Is that not coercion to follow the pagan god? Further more, this "neutral" state has now decided it can arbitrarily call men "women" and women "men" which is a complete rebellion against God's created order.

The idea that a State can consistently provide Just law without honoring God is what C.S. Lewis described as "removing the organ and demanding the function." Nations must honor Christ and kiss the Son lest he be angry. Psalm 2

Having a Christian Nation means that the laws of the land honor Christ. That's it. Now we will look at what Christian Nationalism is not and some common rebuttals.

Christian Nationalism is not having a governing church body like the PCA or SBC rule the country. It's Christians telling the rulers to honor Christ by writing just laws because the Lord hates unequal weights and measures.

"In Mark we are told to preach to all creatures so that's what we must do!" Yes, we are called to proclaim the Gospel to all. This is not an either or but both and.

"But Jesus said, my kingdom is not of this world!" "The statement, "My kingdom is not of this world," relates to the origin and nature of Christ's kingdom, not the location. The authority and power of Christ's kingdom are drawn from a source outside of this world—from God, our heavenly Father. Christ's headship is not of human origin but divine." http://Gotquestions.org

"America was never a Christian nation and that sounds like utopia!" It was what America was founded on as Adams said, "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

Further, many colonies based their laws completely on the 10 commandments as the Massachusetts Bay Colony made disobedience to parents a capital offense and was on the books until 1973.

"You can't force or coerce conversations!" This is a straw man that no one is arguing for. It is about creating a government that honors God. Conversion only occurs through the power of the Holy Spirit. The law is our tutor which teaches us we are sinners and need a savior.

"But the Church flourished under persecution!" Yes the church grew under persecution just as it did when Constantine made Christianity the religion of Rome. Christ will build His Church in any and every circumstance. This does not disregard the call for rulers to honor Him.

"We're blessed if we're persecuted" We should consider ourself blessed that we are persecuted for Christ because that means the world identifies us with Christ. It is a blessing to be in Christ and persecution is evidence of it but not a prescriptive passage.

So what does a "Christian Nation" look like?

It looks a little bit like the experiment those Christian bros started back in 1776.

The woke religion has taken over all our institutions and wants you to think that America was always an experiment in secular humanism and existentialism, and that liberty only flourishes apart from God.

They even want you to think that the Founders thought this way!

While the Founders certainly had a variety of beliefs on God, Natural Law, and governance, they knew that society must be centered around the belief that 1) God gave us rights, 2) that government exists to protect those rights, and 3) that a government not honoring God by doing that job can be overthrown.

That's literally the summary of the opening lines of the Declaration.

So if you want to know where "Christian Nationalism' gets you, may I suggest you look at how the American experiment has led to the greatest surge of human invention, prosperity, and growth in human history – and then realize it looks a little something like that.
