A Cessna 550 jet crashed in the northern suburbs of San Diego this morning, igniting fires in several homes as well as many vehicles.

The number of deaths depends on the number of passengers who were in the plane, which seats 6-8. The number of passengers is still unknown, though reports suggest more than one. All residents of the Murphy Canyon community, which houses many military families, are alive, with a few being treated for minor injuries.

The incident happened just before 4 a.m., and according to reports happened during a period of dense fog. The plane was headed to the nearby Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport from Wichita, Kansas.

Fire Chief Dan Eddy has more:

'There are multiple cars engulfed, we have jet fuel all over the place. We have hazmat on scene, and we asked for more resources. We are also working with the military,' Eddy said. 'The main goal moving forward is to ensure all those houses are cleared and no one is inside. Then we will move in the middle where the plane crashed near the cars and search them, then search the plane.'

There is no word on what may have caused the crash, but I'll update here once we get a count of the passengers.
