Anyone who has become a parent in the last decade has heard it.

And we've heard it many, many times.

And we've all had the same response to it, every time:

Alas, any hope that this insufferable video might be yanked from YouTube has now vanished in a puff of legalese.

Via CNN:

A copyright battle over the viral song 'Baby Shark,' adored by young children and often dreaded by their parents, has come to an end with a court clearing the Korean creators of the most popular version of plagiarism.

A creator known as "Johnny Only" had sued the company Pinkfong (the creator of that ubiquitous version of "Baby Shark") and accused them of plagiarizing his version of the song, which he wrote and published several years before PinkFong's.

Here it is:

Not as hard on the ears as Pink Fong, though it is quite cheesy.

Here's the problem with Johnny Only's argument: "Baby Shark" is decades old; it's a public domain song that has been sung at camps and kids' events for a long time.

The Korean high court thus found against Johnny Only, ruling that there were "already prior versions of Baby Shark in existence and he did not significantly add new creativity."

More from the ruling:

The plaintiff's song is difficult to be protected as a secondary copyrighted work because it did not reach a substantial alteration to the extend where it could be considered as a separate work, by social norms, from the oral song mentioned in this case.

In what will surely be unsurprising news to parents of young children, the Pinkfong version of "Baby Shark" has "clocked up more than 16 billion views on YouTube over the years," a staggering number that really demonstrates just how many times your kids want it played over and over again.

Pinkfong, meanwhile, "has made millions from Baby Shark-themed products, including TV shows, movies and smartphone apps featuring the characters Baby Shark, Mama Shark, Papa Shark, Grandma Shark and Grandpa Shark."

And as a parent I'll take at least part of the blame for that one.
