Name me someone better to diffuse a situation like this than a good guy with a gun.
I'll wait...
See, when the mess hits the fan, and you're in some real danger, there's nothing you need more than a good Samaritan with a gun.
That's why David Garza, a Houston middle school teacher, is being dubbed a hero.
Last Sunday, Garza saved a 15-year-old girl from being raped by rushing out of his apartment with his trusty gun. He heard the young girl screaming for help, looked out the window, and saw a man beating a girl on the ground. He didn't think twice and sprang into action.
Garza didn't have time to put any clothes on; he just grabbed his gun, ran outside, and confronted the attacker.
I ran upstairs and grabbed my pistol. Then, I came outside and asked what's going on. The girl screamed, ‘I'm 15. Help me.' So, I pointed my gun at him.
Garza says that the suspect was holding the victim by the hair and was trying to take off her clothes. The attacker let go of the girl when he saw Garza pointing a gun right at him.
He took his hands off right away. He went chasing after her, so I went chasing after him. She got away. She went to someone she knew's apartment.
Garza wasn't the only person who witnessed this attack. But he was the only one with a gun and brave enough to do something about it.
An unnamed neighbor also saw everything that happened from her window. She thinks Garza might have prevented a tragedy by stepping in to help the teenager.
At first, I was scared because I literally thought she was about to get raped. I think if he didn't come out, she probably would have gotten raped.
Garza says he just did what he had to do. What's crazy is that he says that this wasn't the first time he'd gone after someone trying to hurt a child.
I was scared, too. I'm not going to lie, but she needed help more than I was afraid, so I had to do it.
Police released a photo of the attacker, and he's now been tracked down and is in police custody.
If it hadn't been for Garza this arrest would've been made on a rapist instead of someone who had simply attempted a rape (and nearly found out).
Good guys with guns are a public good. Don't ever let anyone tell you different.
