Mercedes and Jonathan Sandhu just welcomed their third, fourth, fifth, and sixth babies earlier this month. Already parents to 3-year-old and 18-month-old little boys, the parents were surprised to find themselves expecting again.
Mom Mercedes told TODAY,
So we weren't trying by any means, but we were excited. We loved the idea of giving our boys another sibling, But when we found out there were four … Holy moly!
Not only were the quadruplets conceived naturally, something that has only been documented 72 times before, but the girls are also identical! I have a feeling things are about to get very confusing in the Sandhu household.
Mercedes recalled finding out there were four babies during her first ultrasound, saying,
Since it was my third pregnancy, I told Jonathan that he didn't have to come to my appointment. I was like, ‘There will be plenty of scans. So I'm there without him, and I'm laughing and then I'm crying. I'm a little bit hysterical. And my doctor goes, ‘Let's call your husband!'
Jonathan was in total disbelief when his wife told him the news, and while the pregnancy was filled with a lot of uncertainty, the parents chose to focus on the miracle of four new lives.
The four girls, Hannah Grace, Lucy Marie, Rebecca Claire, and Petra Anne, were safely delivered on May 1st at just 29 weeks gestation, all weighing under 3 pounds, but healthy and strong.
Jonathan said of the girls' arrival,
The pregnancy was high-risk for Mercedes, too, and I was crying in the delivery room because it was like, ‘Everyone is safe. We made it.'
As of now, the new mom has been discharged from the hospital, while the babies are expected to remain in the NICU at Texas Children's Hospital until sometime in July.
