Texas man plans to adopt baby he found in trash can while visiting family in Haiti

Five years ago, Jimmy Amisial was in Haiti visiting his family for Christmas when he came across an abandoned baby boy in a trash can.

Amisial took the baby to his mother‘s house where they cleaned and fed him before taking him to receive medical care.

Police attempted to find the baby boy's parents, but were unable to locate them. A judge then asked Amisial, who at the time was a 22-year-old college student at Texas State University, if he would like to become a legal guardian to the boy, who he had named Emilio Angel Jeremiah. Amisial, who himself grew up without a father, began to consider the judge's request.

Amisial wrote on his GoFundMe page,

Later on, I was asked to be his legal guardian. Wait! What? I didn't know what I was going to do. I was confused. It didn't seem to make sense to me. My spirit was agitated and kept me awake for days thinking about what to do. I have learned that in life "if you keep thinking on the things you cannot do it will feed your fear and starve your faith." I took courage and stood firmly to carry the cross.

Emilio has been living with Amisial's mom for the past five years while Amisial has been splitting his time between Texas and Haiti and working his way through school and supporting his family.

Amisial began the process of legally adopting Emilio in 2020, and is raising funds to complete Emilio's adoption.

He told Newsweek,

"It's been an incredible journey and watching him grow up has been so rewarding — I'm very proud of him...I truly do feel like a father, and I'm excited to put pen to paper and make Emilio my son — I just need to raise the money first."

Emilio was 4 months old when Amisial found him in the trash can, but now he is 5 years old and beginning school.

Amisial said,

One thing I know is that, you can never go wrong when you choose love. It was those divine moments and interventions to show love, clarity and show the world that we can do better.
