The egg shortage is so bad that major stores are limiting customers to a dozen a day

Feb 12, 2025

I don't think any of us thought that an egg salad sandwich would ever feel like a luxury.

But for many people that's increasingly the case:

Costco and Trader Joe's are limiting the number of eggs customers can buy because of a shortage caused by the avian flu.

'Due to ongoing issues with the supply of eggs, we are currently limiting egg purchases to one dozen per customer, per day, in all Trader Joe's stores across the country,' a grocery chain spokesperson told CNN.

The chain, which has about 600 US locations, hopes that 'these limits will help to ensure that as many of our customers who need eggs are able to purchase them when they visit Trader Joe's.'

The days of eating as many eggs as you want have temporarily been put on hold.

Egg prices "have soared recently because of the avian influenza, which is responsible for the deaths of more than 40 million egg-laying birds last year," CNN reports. The cost of eggs is expected to jump as much as 20% this year.

We've been chronicling the U.S. egg saga for a while now:

The crisis has gotten so bad that even Waffle House is being forced to recoup its costs:

Waffle House is adding a 50-cent per egg surcharge to customers' orders, citing the impact of ongoing egg shortages and rising prices caused by bird flu.

Instead of increasing prices across its menu, the 24-hour breakfast chain is opting for 'a temporary targeted surcharge tied to the unprecedented rise in egg prices,' the Norcross, Georgia-based company said in a statement. 'While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived we cannot predict how long this shortage will last.'

Grocery limits are one thing. Waffle House jacking up prices is another. This is serious!

Of course, there's always Cracker Barrel:
