Now, if you know movies, and moviegoers, and indeed anything about the way the world works, this news will not strike you as all that surprising:
In grim but not surprising news, Universal's [gay romantic comedy] Bros became the latest live-action theatrical comedy to play in primarily empty theaters. The Billy Eichner/Luke Macfarlane-starring romantic comedy earned just $4.8 million over the weekend. That includes $1.84 million on Friday, which includes $500,000 in Thursday previews.
It's brutal but it's not as if it has really caught anyone off guard. What is surprising is the response of the people involved in this film, who in the face of an absolutely dismal box office performance have taken to...ridiculing and slandering their customer base?
I'm afraid so. Here's director and star Billy Eichner, for instance:
"Straight people just didn't show up for Bros." "If you don't want to see a gay romantic comedy then you're a homophobic weirdo." Oh yes, whining about your movie bombing while insulting the people you want to go see it โ that's a winning strategy.
Here's another one of the movie's stars, meanwhile:
"There's so much heart and so many wonderful good laughs in this [movie]," [Dot-Marie] Jones told Variety at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. "I don't know if it's because it's, you know, LGBTQ. It's not contagious โ [expleitive] go see a movie, you know what I mean? It's crazy."
When your movie totally flops and you're reduced to just outright pleading with people to pony up $17 to see it:
Good news, though: If you want to see it, you shouldn't have any trouble getting a ticket!
