French's is releasing a limited edition popsicle featuring their classic ketchup. Thankfully for us here in the US of A, the popsicle will only be available at a few select locations in Canada.
McCormick announced the debut earlier this week in a press release saying,
Available in Vancouver, BC, Toronto, ON, and Leamington, ON this week only, the Frenchsicle's savoury tomato flavour is perfectly balanced with a hint of salty sweetness. Made from 100 per cent Canadian tomatoes, it combines some of the best traditions the season has to offer: ketchup and popsicles.
I understand the association between ketchup and Summer, and between popsicles and Summer, but that does not mean ketchup and popsicles need to be merged. That's like making a watermelon potato salad and saying they're a perfect match.
I have nothing against either ketchup or popsicles but why would anyone think ketchup popsicles are a good idea?
The popsicles are made in partnership with Happy Pops. The founder of Happy Pops, Leila Keshavjee, said,
I love creating innovative treats that appeal to Canada's diverse tastes. I started Happy Pops to bring all-natural, handcrafted flavour to Canadians, so French's locally-grown ketchup is a perfect pairing. I can't wait for people to try this condiment-turned-popsicle.
I feel like this is just an insult to Canadians.
I'm sure Canadians have better taste than this. I can't think of any delicious Canadian foods off the top of my head, but surely there are some.
If you're just desperate to try out the Frencsicle, but don't have the means or desire to travel to Canada to have one, McCormick has released the recipe on their website so you can try it out at home.
And no offense to French's, but if I were so inclined to make this recipe at home, I'd definitely be substituting their ketchup with some good ol' Heinz 57.
