Pulling the goalie is usually reserved for the final minutes of a game when a team is down by a goal or two and gets desperate. They get an extra guy on offense, but, obviously, they no longer have a goalie.
Teams will also pull their goalie during delayed penalties as well, since the moment the defense possesses the puck, the whistle is blown. Unfortunately, sometimes bad things happen when your goalie is pulled.
