Principal Jan McGee of Burns Science and Technology charter school in Volusia County, Florida, just resigned from her job when people found out that she had been scammed out of $100,000 by a person online pretending to be Elon Musk.
They CHEERED when she resigned! Talk about insult to injury!
Jan gave a hundred thousand dollars to someone online who she thought was Elon Musk.
The crook spent MONTHS working on this scam! And this lady thought that she was having a back-and-forth conversation with the owner of Twitter, SpaceX, and Tesla to try to secure some kind of multi-million dollar grant for her school.
Now, I'm only somewhat familiar with education grants, but I don't think you email back and forth with the richest man in the world and then HE asks YOU for $100,000.
And McGee was reportedly told by other people, "Hey! That ain't Elon! Don't send him all this money!" And she went ahead and did it anyways!
I imagine those conversations went like this:
It wasn't even her money. This lady is so dense that she was going to dip into the school's bank account to send a $100,000 check to some rando on the internet, even after she had been warned.
Fortunately, someone gave the school's business manager a heads up and she was able to cancel the check before it ever got cashed.
