Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we've got ourselves a good old fashioned dog racing scandal!
This happened in New Zealand.
Three-year-old Zipping Sarah won the Len, Jane and Penny Hart Memorial Feature, which is apparently a big deal, back in November. The race was held at Addington Raceway in Christchurch, and I'm sure it was a hit for online gamblers with nothing better to do during Covid season than sit by their computer and watch a bunch of dogs chase a pretend bunny around a race track.
And while I'm sure some bettors won a pretty penny on the race, winner Zipping Sarah's trainer Angela Helen Turnwald didn't see a dime of what would've been her $4,000 prize.
That's right.
BECAUSE HER DOG WAS ON METH!
[Zipping Sarah] tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine in a post-race urine sample test. Following the discovery, dog trainer Angela Helen Turnwald was disqualified for four months, fined $3,500, and was stripped off of the winning stake, which was over $4,000.
Officials said, "the level of Amphetamine (as it metabolized from Methamphetamine) in the sample was particularly large."
SO NO WONDER THAT DOGGY WAS MOVING SO FAST!
And how does someone do this? How do you become a person who shoots a dog up with meth? You've gotta be either really stupid or just plain evil. Maybe both.
Of course trainer Angela Helen Turnwald denies having ever done such a thing. Because why wouldn't she?
The entire dog racing industry in New Zealand is now under investigation, and yes, that means we have a full-on doping scandal going on in New Zealand dog racing.
Get your popcorn ready!
I remember going to the dog track in Dubuque with my grandpa back in the day. We'd always bet on the dog who lost a little weight before the race (if you know what I mean). I guess we were doing it wrong, though. We should've been looking for the dog that was up there just tweaking the heck out.
