The Texas heat is no joke, so when Breyana Elwell, looked out her back door last summer to see a squirrel splayed out in front of a fan on her porch railing, she sympathized with the furry creature.
Elwell told the Washington Post,
We were in the middle of a drought; it was so hot. He stayed there for quite some time. He looked like he was just in so much relief.
So the next day Elwell left the fan on again, and to her surprise two squirrels came to bask in the cool air.
She continued to leave the fan on for them and soon started to leave water and snacks out for the rodents. Every day the squirrels would return, and she and her two boys would watch the rodents cool off.
Since last summer, the squirrel paradise has continued to grow, with the help of Elwell's husband, who has helped her build what they call the Squirrel Resort in their backyard.
The resort is set up to look like a replica of New Braunfels, the Texas town where the family lives. "Nut Braunfels," as they call it, is complete with additional fans, houses, feeding stations, a picnic table, and a little Whataburger.

Elwell says that while the hobby is not something that she would have imagined for herself, it's therapeutic for both her and her kids who love to watch the wildlife at play.
It's something we've committed to, and the animals are here for it. We don't plan on stopping anytime soon.
