Nebraska teen competes by herself at state cheer competition after the rest of her squad backs out

When Morrill High School cheerleading coach April Ott found out that three of the four girls on the small school's cheerleading squad would not be able to make it to the competition, she offered to take the remaining squad member, Katrina Kohel, to watch the competition and have a fun trip.

Kohel, the lone senior on the squad, decided that she still wanted to compete, even if she had to do it alone.

Coach Ott said that Kohel is usually more of a follower than a leader but that she had become a great role model for the younger girls on the squad this year.

She told the Omaha World-Herald,

She's in there 100 percent. You never hear any complaints or excuses.

With less than two weeks before the competition, Coach Ott and Kohel reworked the squad's routine into a one-woman show.

At the competition, there were 115 teams with 4-20 members.

Kohel is the only cheerleader ever to compete alone. But the crowd didn't let her cheer alone.

"I probably had the loudest crowd involvement there," Kohel said. "Everybody was cheering with me, and it was an amazing feeling."

Kohel got 8th place in her division, higher than her school had ranked in the past 3 years when they had an entire squad competing.

She turned what would have been a letdown to the end of her high school cheerleading career into a great memory for herself and a heartwarming moment for the entire crowd.

Kohel said,

I feel really proud of myself for knowing I can do it and not giving up. Just getting it done.
