Three men in India died after they trusted Google Maps a little bit too much.
The men were traveling in Uttar Pradesh in Northern India, following the country's favorite GPS app, Google Maps. Unfortunately, the info in the online map system was not up to date, leading to the men driving off of a collapsed bridge.
Police are still investigating the incident, which took place on Sunday, but they believe that Google Maps led the group to take that route.
A part of the bridge had reportedly collapsed earlier this year because of floods and while locals knew this and avoided the bridge, the three men were not aware of this and were from outside the area. There were no barricades or sign boards indicating that the bridge was unfinished.
Yep, the bridge was out. But there were no signs, no barricades, no indication whatsoever that you were about to drive off the bridge into the water.
And now Indian authorities are trying to decide who all to blame for the accident and whether Google Maps holds any responsibility.
Authorities have named four engineers from the state's road department and an unnamed official from Google Maps in a police complaint on charges of culpable homicide.
A spokesperson from Google told BBC Hindi that it was co-operating with the investigation.
When you read the headline, you think that the men who just blindly followed the GPS, like Michael Scott ,are to blame, but all the details make this tragic accident look like the fault of the state. And Google could probably do a better job updating road closures as well.
One of the greatest sitcom scenes in history played out but with a much more tragic ending.
