Residents of Hawaii, Alaska, and the West Coast: this is not a drill. Seek higher ground immediately. Tsunami warnings are in effect.
The cause? A massive earthquake — measuring 8.7 magnitude (with some reports suggesting 8.8) and lasting around 7 minutes (that's a long time for a quake like this) — has struck about 85 miles off the east coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula at a depth of nearly 12 miles.
And apparently, this wasn't the only quake in recent days…
Waves are already crashing on Russian and Japanese shores, and it looks like they're headed east towards the United States.
The tsunami is forecast to hit around 7 PM local time, or just after 1 AM EST.
Here are sirens going off in Maui. 😳👇
Traffic gridlock in Honolulu as people flee to higher ground … absolutely wild. 👇
As a former Hawaii resident myself, I can confidently say I'm praying for everyone there. Stay safe. 🫡
