U.S. hits all-time low in annual World Happiness Report

And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm sad!

And I won't forget when you dead-named me and made me feel real mad! 🎶

Okay, sorry. I'll stop.

It's just, America hit an all-time low on the annual World Happiness Report, and, well, that makes me sad. I'm worried that my sadness will only tank our rating even further, so I figured if I sang a silly song that'd make me happy. And it did.

Anyhow…

Look at that, even our chart looks like a frown. Sad.

In just one year, we've dropped from 15th in the world in happiness to 23rd.

Gallup, whose data powers the World Happiness Report, pointed to "Americans under 30 feeling worse about their lives" for the steep drop.

  • Today's young people report feeling less supported by friends and family, less free to make life choices, more stressed and less satisfied with their living conditions, Lara Aknin, an editor of the report, told Axios.
  • People under 30 today also feel less confident in government and have increased perceptions of corruption, she added.
  • The report also found that older people are now happier than young people in North America — the opposite of many other regions.

So essentially Gen Z. Some late Millennials in there, but mostly Gen Z — you know, the TikTok generation.

More from Axios:

Many Americans have expressed low levels of trust in the political system and fears of political violence.

  • The pandemic also shed light on the high rates of loneliness hitting America's younger generations.
  • The U.S. has also been combatting inflation rates that have affected everything from dining out to the real estate market.

Yeah man, I gotta say, even though "inflation is down," it really is impacting my outlook on life. Like, I'm always buying things now because I'm afraid the price will go up. I don't know how that's impacting my mood, but it can't be good.

And with 2024 being a repeat presidential election of 2020, I can't imagine we'll move up in the rankings when this report comes out next year. Look for us to drop out of the top 25 (not even trying to be funny).

Alright, now for the rankings of the people who ARE happy!

  1. Finland,
  2. Denmark
  3. Iceland
  4. Sweden
  5. Israel
  6. Netherlands
  7. Norway
  8. Luxembourg
  9. Switzerland
  10. Australia
  11. New Zealand
  12. Costa Rica
  13. Kuwait

Yeah, I've got to stop there since Kuwait is happier than us.

Let's look on the bright side and see who is the least happy:

  • The saddest: Afghanistan
  • The runner-up: Lebanon

The report notes they "fall significantly below all other countries that were scored."

Silver linings, America! Silver linings!
