Based upon how the media covered this story, you wouldn't have guessed that the Amazon driver was a Venezuelan migrant. You also wouldn't have known that the driver had prior driving infractions.
Odd details to leave out if you ask me.
The media described the driver as Sarahy Naybeth Parra-Ovalles, a 45-year-old "South Florida woman," or simply an "Amazon driver."
Before we go anywhere, I want you to rest assured that the baby and mother are doing okay. Both are slowly recovering from their injuries.
Parra-Ovalles is accused of hitting the mother and her baby with her SUV before casually placing the infant back into his stroller and fleeing the scene. The Venezuelan migrant, who was delivering Amazon packages inside the gated community, allegedly drove on the wrong side of the road, hitting the mother as she crossed the street with her baby and their dog. The impact reportedly knocked the 30-year-old mother off her feet and ejected the baby from the stroller.
Parra-Ovalles was charged with "leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury," and she is already out of jail.
Surveillance footage captured part of the event, and neighbors who witnessed the crash spoke to 7News, describing the shocking scene.
One eyewitness says, "She dragged the lady for about 10 seconds."
Another witness said she could hear the baby crying.
Heard a baby screaming; it was very intense. Then we heard a horn. You can see in the video, she goes over, she checks, she pick up the stroller, puts it upright, puts some stuff in, leaves the stroller, doesn't even put it on the sidewalk.
A nurse rushed over to help before the rescue teams arrived. Paramedics then took the mother and her baby to Memorial Regional Hospital. The mother ended up with a skull fracture, bruises, and a brain bleed, while the baby had a cut on his forehead.
When questioned by police, Parra-Ovalles said she asked if the woman was okay, and when she nodded, Parra-Ovalles simply drove off.
However, surveillance footage clearly showed that was a lie.
After detectives showed her the video, Parra-Ovalles invoked her rights and was arrested. She was held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade until the bond was posted.
The baby boy is now recovering at home. The mother, on the other hand, is still in the hospital, dealing with the pain from her fractured skull and brain bleed.
Once again, why is a migrant with prior driving infractions being paid to deliver packages for Amazon?
This woman could have killed someone.
Amazon spokesperson Steve Kelly wrote a statement:
This is a terrible incident and our thoughts are with this family. We're looking into the matter and will support law enforcement as they investigate. The driver in question is no longer delivering on behalf of Amazon.
