Sometimes being hungry for a win can have negative consequences.
The Washington Capitals escaped with a win over the Edmonton Oilers this week despite giving up a third-period goal that narrowed their lead to one. Naturally, goalie Logan Thompson blamed the nachos.
According to a report by The Guardian, Thompson said he was distracted by the sudden appearance of delicious nachos on the ice shortly before giving up the goal.
In the third period, the Capitals were leading 3-1 in their road game against the Edmonton Oilers when the nachos - apparently thrown onto the ice by a fan - entered the game. Soon afterwards Oilers winger Corey Perry negotiated the nachos and scored past Thompson.
Thompson complained to the referee about the distraction, but the official was unable to do anything due to the NHL rulebook not providing any guidance on the topic of nachos.
Capitals coach Spencer Carbery insisted Thompson had a good game but said the nachos had caused some debate. "I didn't even notice them, and then guys were yelling, βThere's nachos on the ice!'. I was like, βI don't know, can we challenge that?'"
Fortunately for Thompson, the Capitals held on to seal the win.
