Washington man steals backhoe to rescue dog from the pound, police forced to shoot tires to stop him

Washington man, Clinton Caress, was arrested on Tuesday for trying to spring his pup from the slammer with a stolen backhoe.

The dog had been impounded in an animal shelter after Caress was arrested on a previous charge.

When Caress returned to the shelter to collect his dog after his court case was settled, the shelter told him he would have to wait until the impounding period had officially ended on Friday.

Caress got angry, and the shelter called the cops, even as they pleaded with him to wait until Friday. But Caress obviously knows what it's like to be held behind bars, and he wasn't about to let his pooch rot away a few extra days.

So he did the most logical thing he could think of; he stole a backhoe with the intention of tearing down the Animal Shelter and setting his dog free.

He stole the backhoe near Curlew, Washington, and drove it 30 miles to Republic.

Most backhoes can go all of 20 miles per hour, so this wasn't a high-speed operation, and deputies overtook Caress rather quickly.

They tried to reason with him to get him to stop, but Caress was on a mission. When they got within one mile of the animal shelter, and it was clear that Caress intended to go through with his dog rescue, they shot the tires out of the backhoe.

Sadly, the dog's stay at the shelter will likely be extended over these new charges.

Next time, perhaps Caress should try a more stealthy breakout plan.
