I thought getting a selfie with a bear was the dumbest thing I've seen someone do with a dangerous carnivore.
But that Scottish tourist has nothing on this New Zealand idiot jumping off a boat and body-slamming an orca.
Okay, wrestling fans.
I know it's not technically a "body slam," but that's how it's being reported by other outlets, and it sounds better than "some dude crossbodied an orca," so give me some grace.
After trying to crush the orca from the top rope, the man yells 'I touched it' and asks 'did you get that?'
I mean the bear and the woman were at least on equal footing being land dwellers, but jumping into the water on top of a sea-dwelling animal with a mouthful of razor-sharp teeth … that's just idiotic.
At least that's what New Zealand's Department of Conservation said,
Hayden Loper, a principal investigator at the department, said the 50-year-old man showed reckless disregard for his own safety and that of the orca. 'The video speaks for itself, it is shocking and absolutely idiotic behaviour,' he said.
See?
It's official. That guy is an idiot.
(I'm starting to understand why orcas are attacking boats.)
I'm pretty sure the only reason the guy survived is because the orca was too stunned by the guy's stupidity to eat him.
It would be like getting slapped in the face by a screaming ham sandwich.
How do you eat it after that?
The video, of course, got posted to social media, which is how the Department of Conservation got involved at all.
It was a deliberate attempt to get likes and views on social media. What's also really disappointing is not just the actions of the individual but those in the boat - it is almost a bit of a pack mentality and they are encouraging this behaviour.
Orcas are considered an endangered species, and it's illegal to swim with, harass, or disturb them, which means body slamming is right out.
The unidentified man in the video was issued a $600 fine for reenacting Macho Man Randy Savage's classic move with a killer whale.
