His name was Skakun Vitaliy Volodymyrovychh. He was a Ukrainian sailor who reportedly blew up a bridge (and himself) on Thursday night to stop Russian troops from advancing into Ukraine.
Volodymyrovych's comrades said his sacrifice "significantly [slowed] down the advancement of the enemy" and gave Ukrainian forces time to "regroup and redeploy its defenses."
The aftermath of the explosion can be seen in this video.
"The bridge was mined, but he didn't manage to get away from there," Ukraine's general staff said in a statement. "According to his brothers in arms, Vitaly got in touch [with them] and said he was going to blow up the bridge. Immediately after, an explosion rang out."
The Marine Command plans to "apply to the High Command to aware [sic] the state award to sailor Skakun Vitaliy Volodymyrovych."
