It couldn't have happened to a nicer group of some of the worst people in the world:

More than 200 people, including mafia bosses and white-collar helpers, involved with Italy's most powerful organized crime group, the 'ndrangheta families of Calabria, were convicted Monday at a historic trial.

The 207 convictions and sentences were announced inside a massive fortified courtroom outside the city of Lamezia Terme in Calabria, a poor southern region home to the 'ndrangheta crime families.

The accused faced charges like drug trafficking, arms trafficking, corruption of state officials, extortion, and other bad raps.

Others weren't members of the 'ndrangheta crime family but were charged for acting in complicity with the mafia.

Combined, the sentences amounted to 2,100 years in prison.

So long, scummers!

Just in case you were unaware, the Mafia in Italy is actually a major problem. This isn't the romantic, vaguely honorable sort of criminal enterprise run by Vito Corleone in The Godfather; nor is it even the angry, screwy, violent mafia antics depicted in Goodfellas.

This is a massive, major network of grifters, murderers, psychopaths and other criminals, extorting innocent people, causing chaos, and making life miserable for many Italians.

It's bad stuff. And the judge in the case, meanwhile, was determined to do it right:

The judge overseeing the trial, Brigida Cavasino, took an hour and 40 minutes to read out the names of the guilty and their sentences, ranging from 30 years to a few months.

The convictions devastated the 'ndrangheta crime syndicate which consists of about 150 Calabrian families and is responsible for $53 billion in criminal enterprises yearly.
