What the heck does "identify as" mean in this sentence?

Here is how the Hollywood Reporter announced that the Asian actress Michelle Yeoh was nominated for an Academy Award this year:

What the heck does "identify as" mean here?

"Identifies as" has traditionally been used to describe the condition of someone of one sex acting as if they belong to the other sex.

But now they're applying it to race?

If race is now something that you can "identify as" and it's not biologically determined... then how do we know that she's the first Asian-identified woman to be nominated?

There is some sort of explanation for the "identifies as" use in this headline though!

So... she's not the first Asian?

Or are the woke implying that the previously nominated Asians WEREN'T Asian because they self-identified as another race?

This is so ridiculous. When will the woke redefinitions ever stop?
