What an awful story to start the new year.
A woman who was hiking in the Colorado Rockies apparently became the unsuspecting victim of a vicious cougar attack.
From ABC News:
A woman was killed in a suspected mountain lion attack while she was hiking alone in the mountains of northern Colorado on Thursday, in what would be the first fatal attack by one of the predators in the state in more than 25 years, authorities said.
Wildlife officers later in the day located two mountain lions in the area and fatally shot the animals, said Kara Van Hoose with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
A couple of other hikers found the woman's body and a mountain lion nearby while they were out hiking. One of the hikers was a physician who attempted to tend to the victim, but she had already died before help arrived.
The two nearby cougars which were found and killed by officials may or may not have been the killers. There's really no way to know for sure.
Van Hoose said the search for other mountain lions in the area was ongoing. She said circumstances would dictate whether any additional lions that are found are killed.
No one in Colorado had been killed by a cougar this century.
