WVU basketball coach arrested for DUI says that he never resigned from his job and is now demanding that the school reinstate him as coach

Former West Virginia University Basketball coach Bob Huggins has big problems with everyone referring to him as a "former" coach.

You see, the basketball coach was arrested a month ago for drunk driving in Pittsburgh and since then the university has moved on from Huggins and gone in a different direction.

Only one problem though: Huggins thinks he's still the coach.

Huggins' Cleveland-based attorney, David A. Campbell, wrote to the university Friday that Huggins "never signed a resignation letter and never communicated a resignation to anyone at WVU," according to the letter, which was obtained by The Associated Press on Saturday.

The letter threatens a lawsuit if Huggins isn't reinstated. Huggins' demands were first reported by West Virginia network MetroNews.

You see, the school announced that Huggins resigned after his arrest, but according to Huggins, he did no such thing.

The school didn't fire him either, apparently. They just announced the resignation and moved on, promoting assistant coach Josh Eilert to interim coach for the upcoming season.

West Virginia received a correspondence the day of the incident from Huggins' wife indicating that the coach was resigning and retiring. The university also says that Huggins said as much himself in addressing the team and saying he would no longer be their coach.

But now this letter shows up, confusing the entire matter.

The resignation was sent in an email... not from Huggins, but from his wife.

The notice was sent from an email address associated with June Huggins, with a signature indicating it was sent via iPhone. It was sent to Uryasz's email address and did not appear to be a text message, as Campbell claimed.

West Virginia athletic director Wren Baker responded an hour later by writing, "We accept your resignation and wish you the best in retirement. We appreciate your many years of dedication to WVU."

And if that isn't clear enough, the university nearly immediately put out a statement acknowledging Huggins' retirement AND a second statement supposedly from Huggins.

The other was titled "A Message from Bob Huggins to the WVU Community" and began, "Today, I have submitted a letter to President Gordon Gee and Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker informing them of my resignation and intention to retire as head men's basketball coach at West Virginia University effective immediately."

So, did Huggins actually write that statement? It would appear so. However, his lawyer is arguing that the email and the statement aren't sufficient for a resignation:

Campbell said Huggins' contract required the coach to send a notice in writing by registered or certified mail to the athletic director and university general counsel.

Despite the threat of a lawsuit, Campbell's letter said Huggins "does not desire litigation. Rather, he is simply looking for the correction of a clear breach of his employment agreement with WVU."

This is such a bizarre development.

But I think sending the letter was the wrong way to go about this. Bob Huggins should have just shown back up to the office and started coaching again. Gone full George Costanza!
