Wyoming became the first state to ban abortion pills after Gov. Mark Gordon signed a bill on Friday that makes it illegal to "prescribe dispense, distribute, sell, or use any drug for the purpose of procuring or performing an abortion."

The law takes effect on July 1.

The bill includes exemptions for morning-after pills, as well as situations where the woman is in "imminent peril that substantially endangers her life or health" or for a "natural miscarriage according to currently accepted medical guidelines." The bill clarifies that "'imminent peril' means only a physical condition and shall not include any psychological or emotional conditions."

Violators of the new law could be charged with a criminal misdemeanor, which could result in up to six months in prison and up to a $9,000 fine. The bill also stipulates that a woman "upon whom a chemical abortion is performed or attempted shall not be criminally prosecuted."

Gordon said he would allow a separate bill to be enacted without his signature that would ban abortion procedures except "when necessary to protect the health and life of the mother, in cases of rape or incest or to end a pregnancy in which doctors determine there to be a lethal abnormality of the fetus," Fox News reports.
