This email occasionally makes the rounds, and after New York Dems elected a Muslim immigrant commie to be their candidate for mayor, I was glad to see it making the rounds again:

Growing up, my mom worked part-time and my dad had an IT job with a high school diploma and technical skills learned at a local community college. We went out to a sit-down restaurant like Chili's almost every weekend and got fast food several times a week. We lived in a comfortable home - my parents even managed to put on a modest addition on the house. We weren't rich, but it never felt like we were poor.

The world isn't like that for younger generations today. The cost of living is insane, even in sleepy Midwestern towns. Forget investing. Forget saving. Forget starting a business. Forget inventing. The money you earn is constantly being sent to someone else. You have no time or resources for anything else.

Both the Right and the Left feel the financial walls closing in. The Right points to mass migration and DEI hiring policies. The Left points to crony capitalism and the rich.

To that end, they are choosing their champions. The Right wants a man like Trump to make things fair again. The Left wants a man like Zohran Mamdani to make things fair again.

The difference is in how the sides understand fairness, justice, and human nature.

  • The Right generally believes in God as judge. The wicked will be cut off and will be punished, if not in this life, in eternity to come. The Right is concerned with protecting against human nature, understanding it to be sinful and corrupt. The Right believes that disparities are not inherently wrong, but that sin can tip the scales and cause mass injustice if there are not strong safeguards to protect people's life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness.

  • The Left does not generally believe in divine justice outside the vague notion of "karma." It certainly shies away from proclamation of God's holy wrath. As such, it cannot take an eternal view of justice. Justice must be meted out here, now. This requires a strong government that can overpower the rights of the individual. The Left believes that human nature is generally good and that disparity itself is the ultimate evil. It rejects the notion of sin outside of these disparities. The rich are not evil because they seek ill-gotten gains, but because they are rich. The Left's definition of "fairness" means "everyone arrives at the same point with the same resources in the end."

World history easily and quickly teaches that the Left's worldview is disastrously childish. Every government that has been given god-like power over its citizens immediately magnifies the horrors of sinful human nature to exponential ends. One man may give into a fit of road rage; the government that represents a million men may give into a fit of genocidal rampage.

And yet, the fact that communism has never worked and will never work will not stop people from voting for a man like Zohran.

Destruction of the system is the point. Zohran is the type of man who can deliver that destruction.

I should note that poorer New York liberals didn't trend toward Zohran. But low-income Americans usually are not the ones concerned about building capital. That is driven largely by the middle class:

The farthest ends of the spectrum both benefit from the current system: The poorest Americans receive the most government welfare and the richest Americans have learned to use the current system to stay rich.

But in the middle, there are hundreds of millions of Americans.

Many feel like they've been shut out of a game that previous generations got to play. Many are trying to peacefully fix that problem by reforming the system and holding it accountable.

But on both sides, a growing number are beginning to think that reforming the system will fail. In that case, the only way for them to play any future game would be to destroy the current game.

As Jefferson wrote all those years ago:

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

How the Right and Left approach this problem is vastly different. But unless things drastically change, don't expect the "course of human events" to sit idly by.
