A Nashville woman went into sudden labor, and needless to say, she was freaking out.
The woman's friend called 911 and was lucky to have gotten through to emergency operator Kaitlyn Kramer.
Kramer's training kicked in. She remained calm and was able to coach the woman and bystanders through the labor and delivery. The call lasted only about 8 minutes and ended with the birth of a healthy baby boy!
In the recorded audio of that July 7 call, you could hear voices on the other end growing frantic as the mother's water broke and the baby's head started to crown. Kramer said she had to keep reminding herself to stay calm.
Whatever the call comes in, you have to be able to maintain control.
One of the bystanders, a friend of the mother's, was able to help deliver the baby but told Kramer that the cord was wrapped around his neck. Thankfully, they were able to quickly unwrap the cord while Kramer waited to hear the baby's cries.
When I think of a baby being first born, the biggest thing for me is I want to hear them cry. And he did that on his own.
The ambulance arrived and greeted the new baby 8 minutes into the call. Kramer was finally able to breathe and congratulate the mom and friends who were by her side.
I think my favorite part about this whole situation was there was also another younger child in the room, maybe between the ages of seven and 10 years old. She started talking to the baby, welcoming him to the world. And that absolutely just melted my heart.
What's crazy is that this wasn't Kramer's first time delivering a baby over the phone - this was actually the second time she's guided a delivery over the 911 hotline.
We get a lot of sad here. Our job is hard. This is one of the reasons that remind me that what I do is important ... it just it makes me happy to do what I do.
Great work, officer!
