This calf's escape from a Brooklyn slaughterhouse got her a one-way ticket to an animal sanctuary

I wasn't aware that there even were any slaughterhouses still in New York City.

But this cow was, and she wasn't going to just waltz into a processing facility without putting up a fight.

It's true that livestock used to be much more common in New York City, such as this Manhattan scene from 1920.

But that was a long time ago. You generally don't expect to see cows in New York, anyway. One rather assumes that this cow would've preferred to be anywhere else as well.

As the Gothamist reports, the freedom-loving bovine ultimately did not get away:

The "feisty" calf was eventually captured by lasso-wielding workers near Avenue M and 95th Street, according to Vinny Fontana, the owner of nearby Original Pizza.

You can be reasonably sure that if something interesting happens in New York City, it was witnessed by a guy with a name like "Vinny Fontana."

Here's the good news though: While I don't have any qualms about a cow turning into delicious cuts of meat, the calf's efforts got so much attention that the slaughterhouse agreed to send her to live on an animal sanctuary.

Skylands Animal Sanctuary And Rescue announced on Wednesday that the loose cow will officially be relocated to its facility.

"THIS JUST IN. THE OWNERS HAVE AGREED TO LET HER COME AND LIVE OUT HER LIFE ON THE SANCTUARY," Skylands wrote in a Facebook post.

The sanctuary — which has saved many animals from slaughterhouses in the past, including a small herd of sheep just last month — solicited help from its followers to pressure Saba Live Poultry in Brooklyn to allow the calf to live at Skylands.

Sometimes I can agree with the animal activist wackos: After all that entertainment, this cute little cut of beef deserves to live!
