Officials in one Japanese town accidentally deposited 46.3 million yen ($360,000) into the bank account of Sho Taguchi, an unemployed 24-year-old man.
The money was meant to be sent to low-income residents in a small town in western Japan as COVID-19-related subsidies. Taguchi was apparently the first name on the list of 463 low-income households. Rather than him receiving the $780 as planned, he was sent that amount multiplied by the number of households who should have received it.
Taguchi reportedly refused to return the money because, well, he didn't have it anymore. According to local police, he lost almost all of it in online gambling (a move they probably could have anticipated coming from an unemployed 24-year-old man).
Only 10 days after his massive influx of cash, Taguchi had only 68,000 yen ($530) in his bank account. I'm not a gambler, but that seems like an embarrassing level of loss in just 10 days.
He's currently being held on suspicion of fraud and officials hope the money can be recovered and redistributed appropriately.
I doubt they'll give him the $780 back.
