If you're a normal, healthy person, you probably want to forget that the last year ever really happened—the insane COVID crisis, the Black Lives Matter protests and riots, the endless hyperpoliticization of nearly every facet of existence, 24/7. Can't we just let all of it slide quietly out of view and fade away?
Well, guess what: Folks in Virginia a century from now will have a dazzling rundown of all of the stuff that gave you heartburn over the past eighteen months:
Historians believe a time capsule containing many artifacts related to the Confederacy was placed in the cornerstone of the Robert. E Lee statue's pedestal in Richmond.
With the removal of the Confederate monument scheduled to happen Wednesday, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced a new capsule will replace the old one.
Among the dozens of items in the statue:
- An "expired vial of COVID-19 Pfizer Vaccine and CDC Vaccination Record Card"
- A "Black Lives Matter" sticker
- An LGBT pride pin and sticker
- An election officer badge from the 2020 election
Virtually every item in the capsule is related in some way to either the pandemic or to the tumultuous, bitter politics that have marked the past eighteen months. Nothing much fun or mirthful or apolitical. Virginians decades from now will marvel at what a grumbling, joyless place the state seemed to be in 2020 and 2021.
