A grisly years-long mystery in New York State may be about to come to a bizarre and unexpected end:
A suspect is in custody in the Gilgo Beach murders on Long Island in New York, a law enforcement official and two government officials said today, a case that baffled investigators and captured the country's attention for more than a decade.
The suspect has been identified as Rex Heuermann, 59, four senior law enforcement officials briefed on the case said.
Heurmann was until his arrest listed as president on the (since-scrubbed) teams page at RH Consultants & Associates, Inc:
The Giglo Beach murderer, whoever he is, has claimed as many as 18 lives over the course of several years. Investigators began finding bodies near the town of Giglo in 2010. The FBI eventually joined the investigation in 2015.
It is unclear what connection, if any, Heuermann has to any of the victims, many of whom were prostitutes selling services through Craigslist. He reportedly owns a home in Massapequa Park, located about half an hour from Gilgo.
The suspect was reportedly arrested in midtown Manhattan. One associate told media that his arrest was a surprise, claiming: "He was very organized. He was very friendly. I did not see this coming."
