On Saturday, President-Elect Donald Trump drew national headlines and provoked panicked pushback from ideological foes when he announced his choice of attorney and former National Security Council official Kash Patel to replace soon-to-be-fired Christopher Wray as head of the FBI.
To counter the Left's rage, many conservatives have devoted time and attention to defending Patel's appointment, and in so doing, have dangerously overlooked a far more perplexing and concerning nomination that Trump announced just moments before Patel.
President-elect Trump on Saturday nominated Florida sheriff Chad Chronister as administrator of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
'For over 32 years, Sheriff Chad Chronister has served the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, and received countless commendations and awards for keeping his community SAFE,' Trump wrote in his announcement.
The former and future president applauds Chronister for keeping his community "safe," despite the fact that when his community suffered physical and financial ruin from Black Lives Matter riots in May of 2020, Chronister refused to impose a curfew to protect citizens and their businesses:
To be sure, hesitancy to impose a curfew might be an admirable trait for any sheriff, if it was universally and consistently applied. Such is not the case with Chronister, who had no problem locking law-abiding citizens in their homes in order to participate in COVID mania.
It gets much worse. Chronister's apparent abuse of power intensified throughout the COVID debacle with the sheriff boasting online about having a Christian minister arrested for holding worship services against Chronister's dictate:
Not that Christians were the only ones who saw their liberties hogtied by Chronister's office. Trump's pick to head the DEA also shut down barber shops, and tried to impose social distancing requirements on boats. Yes, boats.
But while his office was busy strapping on floaties to patrol waterways with measuring tapes, he was also releasing 165 inmates from prison in order to "stop the spread of COVID."
Make sure you follow that logic: We need to release prisoners to mitigate the spread of Covid, but we need to arrest and imprison a pastor … to stop the spread of Covid. But I guess it makes sense - who knows what that preacher might have done if they didn't keep him behind bars?
Yes, you read that correctly. One of the men Chronister released to "save lives" from Covid committed murder once he was out. And this is the best man President Trump could find to lead the Drug Enforcement Agency?
Oh, and we're not done.
But wait, there's more.
It's a comedy of progressive errors with the guy. For a nice encapsulation of all that is wrong with this pick, take it from those on the ground who know him best and are most familiar with this work:
President Trump is working at breakneck speed to fill his Cabinet and key positions within his incoming administration, all with the intent of hitting the ground running. I can admire that, and it's certainly understandable how, in such an environment, you might whiff on one or two picks.
So let's give a little grace to the incoming president. But let's also be clear: That grace is for making a bad choice, not for stubbornly sticking with it once the error becomes public.
