Sen. Ted Cruz was shocked – and I mean absolutely "shocked" – that Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City is backtracking on his vision of a copless utopia built on equity and rainbows:
Comrade de Blasio pledged to defund the NYPD last summer as the BLM r̶ ̶i̶ ̶o̶ ̶t̶ ̶s̶ protests were underway. The NYC City Council passed a resolution that slashed the department's $6 billion budget by $1 billion shortly thereafter.
While some of that cut got shuffled around through political maneuvering, in the end, about $382 million was completely stripped from police.
Turns out, undercutting law enforcement while making people go crazy from COVID restrictions, driving away the wealthy to Florida, and releasing violent criminals from prison wasn't the best of ideas.
A wave of crime has hit the city in the last year, rising to levels that haven't been seen since the early 1990s.
In the midst of the madness, de Blasio is not just quietly refunding the police budget, he's adding an entire new police precinct!
"One major rollback [of the $1 billion cut] was the planned new precinct, whose budget de Blasio said would instead go to build a community center in Roy Wilkins Park in St. Albans.
But the decision generated a backlash in the mostly Black neighborhood, where local leaders had for years been pushing for a police precinct to serve Rosedale and surrounding neighborhoods, saying residents waited too long for emergency response because they relied on a far-off precinct.
The city will now fund both the new precinct and the promised community center, de Blasio said."
Did you catch that? Like most woke leaders, de Blasio acted on the behalf of black individuals without actually asking black residents what they want or need.
Sure, black communities might be upset that they'll suffer more violent crime when woke mayors get rid of the police, but at least woke voters can go to bed in their comfy suburbs and skyscrapers knowing that racism has been solved!
Politico also noted that the $1 billion pledged cut never really materialized in the first place:
"Other elements of the NYPD budget cuts pledged by de Blasio and the City Council have also been scuttled. They announced that school safety agents would be moved out of the NYPD, but budget documents showed they actually remain within the police department. The same was true for school crossing guards."
You mean this whole thing was always about political gain?
