How's this for a Christmas gift, Alberta?
178,000 signatures and Alberta will be on their way to voting themselves independent of Canada.
With all the oil regulations and liberal nonsense in Canada, Alberta wants out. And the Alberta Prosperity Project is sure the conservatives will never win another federal election, which will only lead to more nonsense. Also a perk, Health Canada will hold no power over Alberta should they secede.
They tried to do this earlier in the year, but the question, "Do you agree that the province of Alberta shall become a sovereign country and cease to be a province in Canada?" was declared unconstitutional for some reason.
Now, after passage of Bill 14, which allows for citizen initiatives to move forward even if they haven't been vetted for constitutionality, Alberta is good to go and will likely vote in 2026 on secession should they get the signatures.
There is an opposing initiative. Here's the CBC:
An opposing citizen initiative petition was declared successful by Elections Alberta earlier this month, after it collected the amount of signatures it needed before the deadline.
The Alberta Forever Canada petition asked the question: 'Do you agree that Alberta should remain within Canada?'
Former deputy premier of Alberta Thomas Lukaszuk, the man behind the petition, has previously said his goal is to have the provincial government ask the petition's question in the legislature and then to have MLAs vote on it.
If the Alberta Prosperity Project's proposal is successful, Lukaszuk says he'll "put together a strong case for why Alberta should stay in Canada."
No word yet on when the referendum would take place, but should it pass we'd be one step closer to a 51st state!
