What a time to be alive!
Meta Platforms will allow Facebook and Instagram users in some countries to call for violence against Russians and Russian soldiers in the context of the Ukraine invasion, according to internal emails seen by Reuters on Thursday, in a temporary change to its hate speech policy.
The social media company is also temporarily allowing some posts that call for death to Russian President Vladimir Putin or Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, according to internal emails to its content moderators.
Hmm... wow! Look at Facebook being the arbiter of truth, righteousness, and judgement. Are they the prosecutor, judge, and jury of the world now?
We really are living in 1984, where Big Brother tells us what to be angry about (Covid yesterday, Ukraine today), and what we mustn't talk about.
May I remind you that a sitting U.S. president was banned by Facebook because some grandmas, podium bandits, and cosplay vikings shuffled through the halls of Congress, killing no one and burning nothing while they respectfully stayed within the ropes of the Statuary Hall.
Then, instead of letting Trump's claims of election fraud be freely discussed, allowing the truth to come to light and prove him either a victim or a fool, they censored anyone who thought that maybe, just maybe, there were some shenanigans with 2 A.M. ballot spikes or burst "water pipes" in ballot counting areas.
Because of that, tens of millions of Americans were driven away from the online "public squares," but their views haven't changed. Facebook didn't stop what they claimed was "misinformation." They merely reinforced, to 70+ million Americans, that there were foul plots afoot. Entirely new platforms have sprung up to allow these free individuals to freely discuss the things Big Tech won't let them talk about, driving a further wedge of distrust in society.
This is what censorship always does.
That goes double when the supposed arbiters of truth at Facebook won't let you talk about Maricopa County but will let you call for the violent, gruesome death of Russian soldiers.
"As a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine we have temporarily made allowances for forms of political expression that would normally violate our rules like violent speech such as 'death to the Russian invaders.' We still won't allow credible calls for violence against Russian civilians," a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.
The calls for the leaders' deaths will be allowed unless they contain other targets or have two indicators of credibility, such as the location or method, one email said, in a recent change to the company's rules on violence and incitement.
Unreal. The wokies at Big Tech really are the worst.
Just a reminder that despite all the warnings that Orange Man Bad was gonna start WWIII...
He was the only president in modern history to start no new wars and was nominated multiple times for the Nobel Peace Prize for the peace deals between several Muslim countries and Israel: something our political elite said couldn't be done!
