On Saturday, all heck broke loose in Syria as Islamic rebels marched through the country causing the president of Syria, Bashar al-Assad to flee the country.
Rebels are now in control of the government. Initial rumors were that Assad had been killed while fleeing, but these appear to be false as Assad has released a statement from Russia.
Assad has apparently given up, choosing to leave the presidential post and hand his country over to the Islamic radicals.
Without the support of Russia, which is fighting their own war in Ukraine, Assad apparently did not have the military strength necessary to hold on to his country.
The prime minister of Syria (who is still in the country) says that he will be cooperating with the rebels to hand over control of the functions of government.
Assad has fallen.
During yesterday's fighting, the President-elect Trump had this message for the United States:
His message: It is not our fight. We may have preference of one wicked regime over another, but it's not our fight.
A Russia-backed regime in the Middle East toppling weeks before an anti-interventionist US president comes into office. That's raising a few eyebrows.
Yeah, about that...
This is a man who the United States had a $10 million bounty on in 2017.
Now he's about to be the official leader of Syria.
So, great job everyone.
These, by the way, are many of the same rebels that the United States was funding in Syria under the Obama Administration before Trump stopped the funding.
If this feels like a last second push by some folks on our side of the Atlantic to pull off this coup before Trump gets into office and Tulsi Gabbard takes over the DNI, well, you're obviously a conspiracy theorist.
We also would do well to remember that radical Islamists aren't exactly the most Christian-friendly people to run a country. They don't think diversity is their strength, that's for sure.
As with all foreign policy, this is insanely complicated. There are no clear good guys on either side of the conflict. As Donald Trump said above, Syria is a mess, but they are not our friend.
We continue to hope and pray for peace.
