The Associated Press (AP) told journalists last Tuesday to "not use the term late-term abortion," but to instead, "use the term abortion later in the pregnancy" or "abortions after XX weeks," according to its updated Stylebook guidelines.
"The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists defines the late term as 41 weeks through 41 weeks and 6 days of gestation, and abortion does not happen in this period," @APStylebook posted on Twitter on Tuesday.
"Instead, use the term abortion later in pregnancy if a general term is needed, but be aware that there are varying definitions of the time period involved. Be specific when possible: abortion after XX weeks when XX is know[n] in the context of the specific story."
AP's "Abortion Topical Guide" also tells journalists to avoid using the terms 'heartbeat bill' and 'abortion ban,' "on their own without explanation."
"The terms are overly broad and misleading given the disagreement over details, such as what constitutes a heartbeat at varying gestational ages. In addition, none of the measures focuses on six weeks," the guide reads. "Do not use the term fetal cardiac activity in the context of abortions before 10 weeks gestational age."
The Associated Press, which purports to be objective, has regularly changed its language in its Stylebook to support ideological stances or movements on the left side of the political aisle.
- Capitalizing the "b" in "Black" when referring to skin color after George Floyd's death and the BLM riots.
- Adding the phrase "pregnant people" instead of "pregnant women" after the leak of the Supreme Court Case decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.
- Labeling terms such as "insane", "crazed", "nuts", and "schizophrenic" as offensive.
- Advocating the push of modern gender theory on children, stating that "experts agree" we should allow "children to express their gender in a way that matches their identity is beneficial."
- Telling writers not to use the word "groom" in stories that may connect the sexualization of children by predators to the teaching of graphic sexual material (particularly LGBT ideology) to young children in schools.
- Embracing the use of the plural pronoun "They" to refer to a single person to match the teachings of gender ideology.
