Scientists just filmed the deepest fish ever caught on camera

The deepest oceans are home to some of the creepiest crawlies that nature has to offer.

Then too they are also home to the snailfish, who just kinda looks like a nerd.

Nerd or not, that sucker is officially confirmed as the deepest-ever fish caught on camera:

Scientists photographed a snailfish swimming 8,336 meters below sea level near Japan, making it the deepest recorded fish ever caught on camera.

For those of you still using the Imperial System of measurement, 8,336 meters is over five miles.

Here's footage of these little guys swimming around down there. This is doubtlessly the first and last time any of them will ever see any kind of light at all.

This is reportedly just about the maximum depth at which fish are expected to be able to survive.

As one researcher put it, if this record is ever broken, "it would only be by minute increments, potentially by just a few meters."
