California bill could ban children as old as 16 from sitting in the front seat

Calling "shotgun" is as time-honored a tradition among American kids as any. Nobody wants to ride in the boring old back seat.

Alas, in California, kids old enough to get their drivers' license may soon be relegated to the back seat literally by law:

If passed, AB435, proposed by Assemblywoman Lori Wilson. would require all children younger than 10 years old and those who are under 13 years old and shorter than 4 feet 9 inches to sit on a booster seat.

Children younger than 13 would not be allowed to ride up front.

Children younger than 16 would also be barred if they fail to meet the minimum height requirement.

Am I crazy or aren't kids supposed to be not just sitting up front, but in the driver's seat by the time they turn 16?

California to kids old enough to drive:

The bill's sponsor, Lori Wilson, literally did the what-about-the-children meme while defending the bill:

God forbid something happens, we want our children to be safe.

Wilson a few years ago sponsored a bill that would have allowed judges to "consider a parents' affirmation of their child's gender identity as a piece of criteria during custody disputes," meaning she's cool with the state helping trans your children but not cool with a 15-year-old riding shotgun.

Folks in the comments were unimpressed:

Keep it up, California, you're doing great!
