It's a bird, it's a plane! Wait, no. It's... Cookie Monster speeding down a German highway?
I'd recognize those big googly eyes anywhere!
No joke, a traffic camera in Dortmund, Germany, caught a driver dressed up as the Cookie Monster zooming down the road at 60 mph. Police are now on the lookout for the Sesame Street fan, who they claim intentionally sped past the camera to get a perfect shot in the fuzzy blue outfit.
The costumed driver was going ten mph over the limit in a 50 mph zone, and while the whole thing might sound like a joke, police say it could have ended badly. They warned that this Cookie Monster stunt could have "endangered human lives."
I'm sorry, but 60 mph in a 50 zone is kinda the norm around here. Not really sure what they've got going over there in Europe.
Anyhow ...
Police spokesperson Peter Bandermann warned that wearing a Muppet mask while driving may seem fun, but it can have deadly consequences (ya think?).
If it turns out this guy was the driver behind the mask, he'll face an additional €60 charge, bringing the total fine up to €100 with that €40 speeding ticket. According to traffic lawyer Arndt Kempgens, driving in Germany while wearing anything that covers your face is illegal. However,
The owner usually has the right to refuse to give evidence. But if he admits to having worn the mask or names the driver, it can be more expensive.
The Sun reported that the vehicle was registered to a 57-year-old man from Hagen, but it has yet to be confirmed that he was driving it. It's still not even clear if this jokester has a history of speeding or even if he has a driver's license.
One thing we do know for sure, though, is that somewhere there is a random person who carries around a Cookie Monster costume for kicks.
Be on the lookout, Germany. You never know when Cookie Monster could strike again.
