Check out the suits that astronauts will use the next time they set foot on the moon

Take a look at this shot of Buzz Aldrin in his space suit on the moon:

It's a good shot, yeah? Makes you feel kinda warm and sort of nostalgic, right?

Well that's because that suit is, y'know, over 50 years old. Your parents or grandparents probably watched this suit as it bounced along the lunar surface. It's old.

Which is why, thankfully, we're getting some new ones before we go back to the moon for the first time in decades:

The latest in lunar space wear — black with orange and blue highlights — comes from Axiom Space in Houston.

At an event in Houston unveiling the new suit, an engineer from Axiom who was demonstrating the lunar gear showed how he could easily squat and move around. The large clear bubble around the head provides wide visibility as well as lighting, which will be important when astronauts step into shadowed craters near the lunar south pole. It also has a mount for a high-definition camera.

You gotta admit, it looks real slick:

The suit's designers, meanwhile, have added many more "joints" to ensure that this bad boy is flexible, maneuverable and versatile for the astronauts to use:

Unfortunately, it won't look quite so cool up there on the lunar surface:

The main difference between the prototype shown today and what will be going to the moon is that the ones going to the moon will be white instead of dark. "That's really for thermal reasons," Mr. Ralston said.

I get it.

Still, the black suit would look pretty dope up there.
