You know sometimes the Boomers say stuff that just makes us want to quietly usher them out of the room. It happens all the time.

But I gotta say, what if we've been misunderstanding the Boomer ethos this whole time? What if they're just engaged in a low-key, understated flame war with the younger generations? And what if they're winning?

For example, via VegOut:

Amazing.

I'm not sure whether to laugh at VegOut or to laugh at Gen Z (maybe both?), but I absolutely couldn't pass up the opportunity to show you this list.

We all know the old folks have always had a way of cutting you to the bone with a casual remark.

We've all heard this brutally congenial line from ladies of a certain age:

Boomers, however, have apparently taken it to the next level. VegOut reports on several biting remarks that Boomers will say apparently without any knowledge that they're offending the most offend-able generation in human history. For instance:

"You're so articulate"

Boomers evidently say this when they're "genuinely impressed by someone's communication skills." Yet Gen Z apparently hears this and thinks the speaker "had low expectations to begin with."

Next up on the list:

"You clean up nicely"

Be honest: We've seen how Gen Z dresses, and a lot of the time it looks like the pigeon lady from Home Alone 2.

Evidently, however, Gen Z sometimes puts on nice clothes, after which Boomers will praise them for it. But to the younger folks such praise "suggests their everyday appearance is somehow lacking or unprofessional" and "feels like a judgment on their regular choices."

(Where's the lie?)

This might be my favorite one:

"You're so tech-savvy"

For a generation that essentially lives on their phones, you'd think Gen Z would love to be called "tech-savvy!" It's high praise for people who are increasingly more digital than organic.

Ahh, but you're not thinking like a youngster.

You see, Gen Z "grew up with technology" and so "being called 'tech-savvy' for basic computer skills" is like "being complimented for knowing how to use a fork."

The other phrases:

  • "You're mature for your age"

  • "You're not like other millennials/Gen Zers"

  • "Back in my day, we would have been grateful for that"

  • "Good for you!"

The kids can't handle encouragement??

Man, I can't wait for the comments on this story.

Keep it up, Boomers, we love your work!
