Yes, you read that correctly: Cornhole.
The bean-filled, bag-throwing, backyard-bbq game has hit the big leagues as Winthrop University recruited Division 1, five-star champs Jaxson Remmick and Gavin Hamann from Colorado to their cornhole team, and awarded them scholarships to the school.
Believe it or not, Winthrop is the first in the nation to award a Division 1 scholarship to cornhole players.
'I'm shocked, I mean, as everybody is,' said Gavin Hamann. 'It's crazy. It's groundbreaking, it's new, it's making history.
'I just never would have thought picking up this hobby about two and a half years ago would turn into a D1 scholarship and a five-star recruitment to this school.'
We're all right there with you, Gavin.
Literally no one saw this coming.
The school even has a cornhole coach named Dusty Thompson.
Thompson said,
This is not just cornhole anymore. This is not just something you might see on ESPN, see pros playing. This is something that is now going to give kids an opportunity to get scholarships, potential full rides eventually.
Hamann then went on to talk about the future of cornholing.
Cornhole is being played from ages, like 3 to 70. I mean, there's ages all around the board, and there's so many kids that want to make this their career, and I think this is the gateway to make that happen. And I'm excited to be part of that.
They even got some coverage by media that doesn't just report things that should be satire but aren't.
My kids are looking at careers in engineering and farming, but maybe I should make them practice throwing bean bags at a hole in a slanted board, just in case they need a backup plan.
(Can we cut funding to these schools now, please?)
