Yesterday, we reported that 95-year-old actor Gene Hackman and his 65-year-old wife Betsy were found dead in their New Mexico home alongside their dog.

At the time, every internet sleuth, including Hackman's daughter Elizabeth, proclaimed carbon monoxide was the probable cause.

As it turns out, there was no evidence of a gas leak, the couple looked to have been dead for days (if not weeks), and the bodies were scattered around the house.

From the New York Post:

Gene Hackman's wife was found mummified and bloated when the two were discovered dead with their dog in their multimillion-dollar New Mexico home — and the maintenance workers who initially discovered the quieted house said [they] hadn't seen the couple in about two weeks, police wrote in an affidavit.

  • Gene Hackman was found in the $3-million home's mudroom, which is adjacent to the kitchen, next to a pair of sunglasses and a cane. Cops say it looks like he suffered a sudden fall.

  • His wife was found in a bathroom near the entrance to the home with an open orange prescription bottle and pills scattered on a countertop near her.

  • A space heater had fallen onto the floor next to her head.

  • One of the couple's dogs was shut "10-15 feet away" inside the closet just off the bathroom.

  • The door to the home was found unlocked and ajar, but it did not look like anyone had forced their way inside.

  • Firefighters confirmed there was no gas leak.

  • Two other dogs, one inside the home and one outside, were found alive.

Here is the 911 call after the maintenance workers, Roland Lowe Begay and Jesse Kesler, spotted the couple through the windows.

On Thursday morning, the local sheriff's office in Santa Fe said "Foul play is not suspected as a factor in those deaths at this time."

Now, cops say the deaths are "suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation."

I guess we'll have to wait to see if these Sherlocks find anything.
