At a certain point you have to accept the obvious: All the anecdotes you're hearing are slowly adding up to data, the problem is getting worse, crime is legitimately getting out of control in the U.S.:
The mother of four from Uptown New Orleans has created a magnet and stuck it to the back of her car. It reads: "Don't carjack me. Kids inside."
"It takes a long time to get them in and our of carseats," she said of her kids. "With a gun to your head, I can't imagine having to go through something like that."
Barnetzer originally made the magnets for herself and a few friends, in response to the city's recent surge in carjackings. But after she showed her Instagram followers the magnet, more parents began requesting them.
"I just think it's something people feel personal about and can't imagine or know what they would do," she said.
"People... can't imagine or know what they would do."
Yes, that is very true. And it wasn't that long ago that they wouldn't have even thought about it anyway. But now they must not only think about it but plan for it, to the point that they are trying to ward off criminals by using stickers on the outsides of their cars.
I mean, don't get me wrong: I get it. If you can do anything that you think might help protect your kids in such a situation, you're probably gonna do it.
Still, how likely is such a bumper sticker going to matter to sick criminals who were planning to carjack you anyway? It seems ultimately like it's not gonna change their calculus all that much.
